How to reach Rara Lake - West-Nepal
There are
several alternatives to reach Rara Lake.
The most commom proposed option by trekking
agencies in Kathmandu is through a 14 day camping trekking via Jumla. You can
reach Rara lake in 3 or 4 days of trekking from Jumla.
You can reach
Jumla by plane from Nepalganj, which on its turn you can reach by air from Pokhara or Kathmandu.
The bus ride from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj takes at least 12 hours.
A good alternative is to fly directly to Talcha
airport
near Gam Ghadi (district headquarter of Mugu district) and Rara lake.
You can fly to Talcha airport from Nepalganj with
Yeti airlines (around $100
one way reis or rs4000 for Nepalese).
You can also reach Gam Ghadi directly by helicopter
from Nepalganj or Surkhet. A helicopter flight is around 20 to 25% more
expensive, but saves you a tough walk from Talcha to Gam Ghadi and back.
Rara locals expect a direct flight from
Kathmandu to Talcha somewhere in the year 2008. Furthermore the highway from
Surkhet to Jumla is finished for 75% and will reach completion within few years.
